VOD Platforms: The fascinating journey of kids & teens through digital era

From the early years of life, children enter an audiovisual universe that has become as commonplace as breakfast. Immersed in the world of series and movies, YouTube is the gateway, marking the beginning of a journey that evolves over time.

Askids, the data & insights platform for the U18 segment, through its "Entertainment Industry" report, invites us to delve into this journey where screens play a significant role in the lives of children and teenagers.

Starting from the age of 9, a transition occurs in the young digital explorers who shift their focus towards VOD applications, constituting 81% of U18 individuals in Latin America who consume Video on Demand (VOD) as one of their main leisure activities, even when with their families.

In this growth journey, the preferences of children and teenagers lean towards giants like Netflix and YouTube, gradually bidding farewell to the YouTube Kids stage as they mature. Smart TVs emerge as the preferred device to immerse themselves in animated worlds, closely followed by laptops and tablets, creating a constantly evolving multimedia experience.

Data collected by Askids also reveals that, on average, young viewers adeptly manage three SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) applications: Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video, offering a range of options that embrace the changing tastes of young viewers.

Adventure and comedy emerge as themes that transcend genres and ages, merging imaginations and generating shared laughter. While girls find delight in animal stories, boys immerse themselves in the vibrant universe of superheroes.

The phenomenon is not limited to the screen alone but extends to everyday life. Seven out of ten children and teenagers become consumers of licensed items, turning characters like Barbie, Lady Bug, and Frozen into unparalleled playmates. For boys, anything related to Marvel is an undisputed choice.

Another revealing fact is that five out of ten teenagers influence their families on which platform to subscribe to, turning it into an ideal family activity for weekends. A digital bond that goes beyond the screen, building conversation bridges and sharing around the screens.

Thus, in the fascinating digital universe of Kids & Teens, every click is a door that opens to new stories, adventures, and connections. From YouTube to Netflix, the screen journey is a constantly evolving narrative that reflects the very essence of growing up in the digital age.
